New Design Ideas

Modern design practices, shaped by ideals of hygiene, cleanliness and order, have evolved into “sterile” approaches that prioritize standardization and uniformity. Characterized by rationalism and authoritarian uniformity, such practices often suppress spatial and social diversity and restrict interactions between subjects and objects. In response, the notion of “dirty design”, centered on the concepts of dirt, disorder and imperfection, has emerged as a critical and productive alternative. This article conceptualizes “dirty design” not merely as a physical condition, but as a cultural, theoretical and social strategy. Situated within the “city-dirt-architecture” nexus, the paper explores how dirt manifests in design through the analytical lenses of stratification and othering. Utilizing a qualitative, comparative case study method, the research examines three projects - High Line (urban scale), Ruin Academy (structural scale) and The Ethics of Dust (spatial scale) - and assesses how “dirt” is integrated materially and conceptually. Findings reveal that integrating dirt into design processes enhances aesthetic richness while reinforcing values such as inclusivity, collective memory and spatial belonging. Ultimately, the study proposes that “dirty design” offers a transformative framework for rethinking spatial practices, challenging sterile norms and fostering more layered, creative and context-sensitive design approaches.
