Abstract

This research aims to discuss an important topic in Chinese typeface design, focusing on the visual impact of combining Arabic and Latin to enhance bilingual design, the research begins with the premise that the tenses and consistency between the two languages are crucial and fundamental factors in shaping the visual identity of a language. Four case studies of popular fonts in the market (Fedra, Diodrum, Koufiya and Viceroy) were analyzed to demonstrate compatibility by examining the principles of visual formatting for bilingual design using a qualitative approach. These case studies are focused on bilingual digital fonts designed to address visual compatibility challenges in different contexts. The research produced several findings indicating that visual modification has a positive impact on enhancing visual consistency: 1) Visual perception takes precedence over geometry: Visual-perceptual adjustments, such as applying overshoots to the Fedra and Koufiya fonts to raise the circular letters to visually equalize them with the vertical ones, achieved more balanced and consistent horizontal results compared to relying solely on geometric accuracy. 2) Achieving Text Density Balance: The results showed that adjusting and balancing text density depends not only on typeface thickness, but also on achieving visual equality in text color between Arabic and Latin scripts, as seen in the Koufiya font. The visual adjustment also included increasing the width of some Latin letters to harmonize with the horizontal nature of the Arabic letters, as in the Fedra font, resulting in a more uniform text density. This study highlighted both the theory and practice of bilingualism and helped identify the dual challenges in visual communication, it also established and clarified a framework for new design principles applicable to the Arab region, where this language is used and Latin needs to be integrated into designs. The primary aim of this study was to help graphic design students and viewers to understand how the visual and linguistic systems are integrated to build and achieve effective communication.
