Abstract

The Madinan Charter, established by Prophet Muhammad (SAAS) in 622 CE, represents one of the earliest constitutional frameworks that fundamentally rearticulated the principles of governance, justice, and social coexistence within a pluralistic society. It formally acknowledged religious diversity, safeguarded the rights of distinct communities, and instituted a system of collective responsibility aimed at preserving social order and security. By granting autonomy to various religious groups while simultaneously incorporating them into a cohesive political structure, the Charter fostered an environment grounded in mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperative engagement. Beyond its immediate historical context, the Charter reflects a sophisticated and forward-looking philosophy of peace-building that rises above sectarian divisions and emphasizes inclusivity, equity, and non-aggression. In an era increasingly characterized by religious tensions and societal fragmentation, the Madinan Charter offers a compelling normative model for promoting interfaith harmony and sustainable peace. It underscores that the pursuit of peace in Islam is not incidental but constitutes a central ethical imperative embedded within its earliest political and social institutions. Consequently, the Charter remains a timeless paradigm for harmonizing diversity with unity and for advancing human dignity through principled and peaceful coexistence.
