Impact of Drought Stress on Key Agronomic Traits and Yield Components in Diverse Cotton Genotypes
Drought stress significantly limits global cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) productivity by disrupting physiological processes and reducing yield components. This study evaluated 15 cotton genotypes (14 G. hirsutum L. and one G. barbadense L.) at the Absheron Experimental Station during 2024-2025 to identify drought-tolerant varieties with high economic performance. A split-plot design was employed, comparing normal irrigation (control) with drought stress conditions. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that drought stress significantly impacted boll weight and yield per plant (p < 0.05), while vegetation period and fiber yield remained relatively stable. Genotypes 'Cristina' and 'Ak-Altun' demonstrated notable resilience, exhibiting increased yield per plant under stress. 'Prime-9811' showed a compensatory increase in boll weight. These findings provide valuable insights for selecting drought-tolerant cotton genotypes to enhance sustainable agricultural productivity in water-limited environments.
