Applications of CRISPR/Cas Genome Editing for Trait Improvement in Grapevine (Vitis vinifera)
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is the significant crop in the global food and wine industry. A large part of the grape harvest is being lost due to the effects of biotic and abiotic stresses. Developing new grape varieties that meet the demands of the growing population and the rapidly changing environment is an urgent task. This task can be achieved by using modern genome editing tools such as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins. CRISPR-Cas is a versatile and user-friendly genome editing technology that has been used to modify the properties of a variety of organisms, including grape plants. Since grapevine is a perennial tree, its genome can be edited in a short time using CRISPR/Cas. In this review article, we discuss the use of the CRISPR/Cas system in increasing the resistance of grapevine plants to external environmental factors and the advantages of this method over other biotechnological methods. We believe that this new genome editing technology will play an important role in improving the characteristics of economically important plants such as grapevines.
