Distribution, Numbers and Morphology of Black-Headed Ground Snake (Rhynchocalamus melanocephalus satunini, Nikolsky, 1899) in Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan)

Abstract

The presented article provides information on the modern range, distribution, number and morphology of the Black-headed Rhynchocalamus (Rhynchocalamus melanocephalus satunini Nikolsky 1899) in Nakhchivan. A study was conducted on selected on foot transects in the habitats of the species and 3 new sites of discovery were discovered. The number of individuals in the transects showed that 0.011-0.016 individuals are found per km. The morphology of the encountered individuals was studied. 2 color variations were evaluated in the individuals (light brown and orange). The study showed that Black-headed Rhynchocalamus has a wider range in Nakhchivan, but its habitat is decreasing. Black-headed Rhynchocalamus is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Azerbaijan as a vulnerable rare species (VU).
